We now follow the guide further down into the ship, to the lower deck. The saloon here is still in a basic state, with temporary decking. It was previously much larger than this but a new bulkhead has been installed forward of the companionway to improve watertight integrity. That space has no deck laid and is not currently accessible.
In excursion service this space provided a bar and seating although the view out would have been much poorer than from the upper saloon. During the war the lower aft saloon was used as a supplies storage area.
In the last few years the society has used this space for temporary displays of various aspects of the ship’s history. Take a while now to browse a selection of the display panels in the gallery below.
