Forward saloon

We now follow the guide a very short distance to the forward saloon.

In excursion service the forward saloon was fitted with wooden slatted side benches and contained a general seating area and the “Acorn Bar”. It is currently equipped with temporary furniture as seen on the left. On a good day you can get a cup of tea or coffee from the galley and sit down to enjoy it. You’ll also find the gift shop in this area, for you to buy gifts or perhaps treat yourself to a book or other souvenir of our visit.

During the war this area was divided with a passage way down the centre and mess decks on either side. To starboard (right) was the stokers’ mess and to port was the Petty Officers’ mess, used as an impromptu sickbay during the Dunkirk evacuation.

In Medway Queen Club days on the Isle of Wight the compartment remained as a bar but with rather more plush furniture including arm chairs that had previously graced the aft saloon restaurant. Sadly, these all “disappeared” while the ship was on the Isle of Wight.
